The Ultimate Balkans Motorcycle Tour — 5 Countries in 13 Days
Inside the Balkans is the most ambitious on-road motorcycle tour Ride in Romania offers — thirteen days and roughly 2,900 kilometers across five countries: Romania, Serbia, Montenegro, Croatia, and Bosnia & Herzegovina. Starting and finishing in Bucharest, the route links Romania’s legendary Carpathian passes with the Adriatic coast, dramatic national parks, UNESCO World Heritage cities, and some of the finest mountain roads in all of Europe.
From the Transfăgărășan to the Adriatic
This tour opens and closes with Romania’s two icons — the Transalpina, the highest paved road in the country at 2,145 meters over the Urdele Pass, and the Transfăgărășan, 90 kilometers of hairpins climbing to 2,042 meters across the Făgăraș Mountains. In between, you’ll ride south through Serbia’s Kopaonik National Park, down to Montenegro and the breathtaking Bay of Kotor — a UNESCO site where you ride with the Adriatic on one side and mountains on the other — and up to 2,000 meters again in Durmitor National Park, past the glacial Black Lake and along the rim of the Tara Canyon, the second-deepest canyon in Europe.
UNESCO cities: Dubrovnik, Kotor and Mostar
This is as much a journey through history as it is a ride. You’ll spend a full rest day in Dubrovnik, walking the medieval city walls above the terracotta rooftops of the UNESCO-listed Old Town. You’ll cross the famous Ottoman bridge at Mostar, a World Heritage site founded in the 15th century, and pause at the thundering Kravica Waterfall in Bosnia. Back in Romania, you’ll ride the Danube through the Clisura Dunării gorge, past the colossal 55-meter rock sculpture of the Dacian king Decebal.
Comfort across five countries
Thirteen days on the road demands proper support, and this tour delivers it. You’ll sleep in 4-star hotels every night, ride a GS equipped with side and top cases, and travel with an experienced guide, detailed route sheets, 24-hour technical support, and a support van for luggage, souvenirs and passengers. A full rest day in Dubrovnik lets you recharge mid-tour. With a maximum of 8 motorcycles, the group stays small and the experience personal.
Who this tour is for
Inside the Balkans is an on-road touring adventure for riders who want a genuine multi-country epic — the kind of trip you talk about for years. It suits all experience levels and is passenger-friendly, with a dedicated passenger price and van support, making it ideal for couples and anyone who wants the full Balkans experience in comfort. Day by Day
Day 1 — Bucharest arrival
Welcome to Romania! We pick you up from the airport and bring you to the hotel. Bucharest is a city of vibrant culture, art galleries, museums and a busy night life. Known as “Little Paris” for its reputation for the high life, Romania’s largest city and capital offers historical charm, museums, art galleries, exquisite Orthodox churches and unique architectural sites. Depending on your arrival time, you can visit the Palace of the Parliament (formerly the People’s Palace) — built to Nicolae Ceaușescu’s vision, it spreads across 3.76 million square feet and is the world’s second-largest building after the U.S. Pentagon. In the evening we meet for a welcome briefing, followed by a special welcome dinner where we discuss the tour ahead.
Day 2 — Bucharest to Orșova · 375km
We leave the city behind and ride a spectacular road down to the Danube. Consider this a warm-up for the days ahead — a relaxed introduction to the journey across five countries.
Day 3 — Orșova to Kopaonik National Park · 270km
We cross into Serbia and head for Kopaonik National Park, Serbia’s largest mountain. We ride beautiful roads up to 1,700 meters, surrounded by mountain peaks and extraordinary natural beauty — a perfect day for both riding and photography.
Day 4 — Kopaonik to Bay of Kotor · 340km
Next stop: the Bay of Kotor, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the most impressive landscapes on the Mediterranean. We ride along the coast with the Adriatic on the left and mountains on the right — the sight of these peaks plunging into the sea makes every kilometer worth it.
Day 5 — Kotor to Lovćen National Park to Dubrovnik · 240km
A spectacular day of riding — roads full of hairpins and endless curves all day long. We climb through Lovćen National Park with its incredible landscapes, then leave the Bay of Kotor behind and cross into Croatia, finishing in Dubrovnik.
Day 6 — Dubrovnik · rest day
Explore the beautifully preserved medieval fortifications of Dubrovnik’s UNESCO-listed Old Town. Take in the terracotta rooftops and centuries-old stone monuments — from the 17th-century Rector’s Palace to the Baroque Cathedral. Walk the City Walls for spectacular views, or sit on the Stradun, the vibrant main street, with a coffee. Take the cable car to the hill above the city for breathtaking views over the Old Town, the crystal-clear Adriatic, and the islands beyond.
Day 7 — Dubrovnik to Kravica Waterfall to Mostar · 250km
We start on the Adriatic coast and ride into Bosnia & Herzegovina. On the way to Mostar we stop at the stunning Kravica Waterfall, a natural wonder not to be missed. Mostar was founded by the Ottomans in the 15th century at a strategic river crossing — the famous stone bridge they built there is now one of the most photographed UNESCO World Heritage sites in the world. Countryside roads lead us through villages and small towns along the way.
Day 8 — Mostar to Durmitor National Park to Žabljak · 240km
We continue to Durmitor National Park — beautiful landscapes, glacial lakes like Crno Jezero (the Black Lake), and perfect roads full of hairpins. We ride in the mountains up to 2,000 meters of altitude.
Day 9 — Žabljak to Vrnjačka Banja · 340km
We start the day on roads packed with hairpins and curves. Our first stop is the Tara Canyon, the second-deepest canyon in Europe. Quiet countryside roads then lead us through villages on the way to Vrnjačka Banja.
Day 10 — Vrnjačka Banja to Orșova · 240km
Today we ride back into Romania, following the Danube on a beautiful road with great landscapes. We pass through the Clisura Dunării — where the history of Romania begins — and the colossal rock-carved figure of the Dacian king Decebal, 55 meters high and 25 meters wide.
Day 11 — Orșova to Transalpina to Sibiu · 340km
We ride the Transalpina, the highest mountain road in the entire Carpathian chain — fantastic roads and beautiful serpentines at 2,145 meters, a perfect playground for demanding riders. We finish the day in Sibiu, founded by Saxon colonists and once called Hermannstadt, a former European Capital of Culture full of museums and monuments.
Day 12 — Sibiu to Transfăgărășan to Bucharest · 310km
Today belongs to the Transfăgărășan — 91 kilometers of pure riding bliss. Built at 2,042 meters over the Făgăraș Mountains, Romania’s highest range, it offers some of the most spectacular scenery in Europe. We finish in Bucharest with a goodbye dinner and a chance to share the best moments of the tour.
Day 13 — Bucharest departure
Fully loaded with unforgettable experiences and memories ripe for storytelling, it’s time to head for the airport. We’ll see each other again on our next tour!
