TOUR TYPE: On-road touring · All experience levels. Romania’s iconic mountain passes, UNESCO monasteries and Dracula’s castle — the culture tour on two wheels.
Discover Romania
9 DAYS · 7 RIDING DAYS · 2500 KM
This is the grand tour of Romania — nine days, 2,500 kilometers, and the two most famous mountain roads on the continent, ridden back to back. The Transfăgărășan, which Top Gear’s Jeremy Clarkson once called the best road in the world, and the Transalpina, the highest paved road in the country. Between them, a land where medieval legends meet living tradition: UNESCO-protected painted monasteries, fairytale wooden churches, Saxon citadels, and the castle that gave the world Dracula.
Most riders chase the Stelvio, the Pyrenees, or the French Alps — and fight the crowds to do it. Romania is Europe’s undiscovered gem: the same jaw-dropping switchbacks and alpine passes, without the traffic. You’ll ride comfortable touring GS machines through four distinct regions, sleep in 4-star hotels, and travel with expert guides, full van support for luggage and passengers, and a group capped at just 8 motorcycles. Bring a passenger if you like — there’s a dedicated passenger price and room in the van.
This isn’t a sprint between photo stops. It’s the definitive way to see Romania on two wheels — the roads, the history, the food, and the culture, all in one unforgettable trip.
Iconic roads. Painted monasteries. Dracula’s castle.

The Grand Motorcycle Tour of Romania
Discover Romania is the ultimate on-road motorcycle tour of the country — nine days and roughly 2,500 kilometers linking Romania’s most iconic mountain roads with its richest history and culture. Starting and finishing in Bucharest, the route crosses four distinct regions, riding the legendary Transfăgărășan and Transalpina, the painted monasteries of Moldavia, the wooden churches of Maramureș, and the medieval cities of Transylvania.
Ride the world's most famous mountain roads
This tour puts Romania’s greatest roads beneath your wheels: the Transfăgărășan at 2,042 meters over the Făgăraș Mountains — often called the most spectacular road in Europe — and the Transalpina, the highest road in the entire Carpathian chain at 2,145 meters. Between them you’ll ride the TransRarău, the Bicaz Gorges past the eerie Red Lake, and a string of high passes: Prislop, Cheia, Urdele, Râșnov, and Tihuța, the pass made famous by Bram Stoker’s Dracula.
Where medieval legends meet living tradition
More than a riding tour, this is a journey through Romanian culture. You’ll step inside the UNESCO-protected Voroneț painted monastery, the work of Stephen the Great; visit the Bârsana wooden church in Maramureș and the famous Merry Cemetery of Săpânța; walk the cobbled medieval streets of Brașov and the Saxon city of Sibiu, a former European Capital of Culture; and tour Bran Castle, the home of the Dracula myth. Every day pairs world-class riding with a place worth remembering.
Comfort, support and small groups
This is touring done right. You’ll stay in 4-star hotels and pensions, ride a GS equipped with side cases and top case, and travel with an experienced guide, 24-hour technical support, and a support van for luggage, souvenirs, and passengers. With a maximum of 8 motorcycles, the group stays small and the experience personal. Ride your own bike or rent from a full range of BMW GS models.
Who this tour is for
Discover Romania is an on-road touring holiday suited to riders of all experience levels who want the country’s best roads and deepest culture in one trip. It’s also passenger-friendly — there’s a dedicated passenger price and van support — making it ideal for couples and anyone who wants the full Romanian adventure in comfort. If you’re looking for the definitive motorcycle tour of Romania, this is it.

Day by Day
Day 1 — Bucharest arrival
Welcome to Romania! We pick you up from the airport and bring you to the hotel. Bucharest is a city of vibrant culture, art galleries, museums and a busy night life. Known as “Little Paris” for its reputation for the high life, Romania’s largest city and capital offers historical charm, a wealth of museums and art galleries, exquisite Orthodox churches and unique architectural sites. Depending on your arrival time, you can visit the Palace of the Parliament (formerly the People’s Palace) — built to Nicolae Ceaușescu’s vision, it spreads across 3.76 million square feet and is considered the world’s second-largest building after the U.S. Pentagon. In the evening we meet for a welcome briefing, followed by a special welcome dinner where we discuss the tour ahead.
Day 2 — Bucharest to Zetea · 345km
We leave the city behind and ride a spectacular mountain road to Zetea. Today we discover the beauty of the Transylvania region — the perfect opening to nine days of Romania’s finest roads.
Day 3 — Zetea to Bicaz Gorges to Voroneț to Frasin · 255km
Time for wild landscapes and quiet countryside roads. First target: the dramatic Bicaz Gorges and the Red Lake — also called the Killer Lake for the petrified pine trees that rise from the water. We cross into Moldavia, a region rich in history and legend, and step inside the UNESCO-listed Voroneț Monastery, the most important building of Stephen the Great, with its extraordinary 16th-century biblical frescoes, royal pews and period vestments.
Day 4 — Frasin to TransRarău to Bârsana · 230km
We step into another world — the Maramureș region, with its own culture and stories. We ride the gorgeous TransRarău road, a fairytale landscape steeped in mystery, on our way to the Bârsana monastery, the highest wooden church, first built in 1390.
Day 5 — Bârsana to Sibiu · 330km
Today we reach Sibiu, founded by Saxon colonists and once called Hermannstadt. Named a European Capital of Culture in 2007 (alongside Luxembourg), this “music city” offers a wealth of cultural monuments, museums, and artistic events.
Day 6 — Sibiu to Transalpina to Horezu · 240km
We ride the Transalpina, the highest mountain road in the entire Carpathian chain. Fantastic tarmac and beautiful serpentines climb to 2,145 meters — a perfect playground for demanding riders, and a landscape worth every photo stop. We finish the day in Horezu.
Day 7 — Horezu to Transfăgărășan to Bran · 330km
Today belongs to the Transfăgărășan — 91 kilometers of pure riding bliss. Built at 2,042 meters over the Făgăraș Mountains, Romania’s highest range, it offers some of the most spectacular scenery in Europe. We finish our day in Bran.
Day 8 — Bran to Bucharest · 250km
We start with a visit to Bran Castle, the home of the Dracula myth, and the stories behind the world’s most famous vampire. Next stop is Brașov, where we walk the labyrinth of cobbled medieval streets — one of Europe’s best-preserved 12th-century Saxon cities — and visit the Black Church, its walls darkened by the Great Fire of 1689, with its renowned collection of Oriental carpets. We close the day in Bucharest with a goodbye dinner and a chance to share the best moments of the tour.
Day 9 — Bucharest departure
We hope you enjoyed the tour. Safe travels and a happy journey home — until the next ride.
